Purpose of Position : This position is tasked with the design, oversight, maintenance, and modifications to the campus landscape, hardscape, equipment, and irrigation systems throughout the 110-acre campus.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Tasks
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
Perform minor maintenance repairs to landscape equipment including mowers, blowers, trimmers, etc.
Maintain an inventory and preventive maintenance schedules for landscape equipment to ensure the safe operation of the equipment.
Estimate materials and labor costs for external repairs to landscape equipment
Prepare cost estimates for proposed improvements and upgrades to landscape equipment.
Horticulture :
Knowledge of a wide range of plants that commonly grow and thrive in the California climate, including watering, feeding, pesticide applications, pruning and the ability to recognize symptoms of stress or disease.
Perform the appropriate work to maintain and modify the landscaping as needed.
Assist with coordinating the work of the gardeners and supplying them with materials.
Landscaping :
Support the planning, design, and installation of landscaping and irrigation improvements.
Provides backup support for routine maintenance services
Inspects the quality of the landscape across the campus to help ensure standards are being met
Monitors and adjusts the watering schedules in an effort to support the University's water conservation efforts.
Operates and repairs Irritrol and Calsense irrigation controllers.
Material Management:
Specifies, selects, and oversees the use of all materials necessary to support the landscape operations, including plant support (plants and soil amendments), irrigation equipment and pesticide application.
Maintains an inventory of materials to ensure resources are available to the gardeners
Responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of the landscape material bins where excess materials are stored
Secondary Tasks
Turf Maintenance: Working knowledge of turf fields and ability to support maintenance and repairs.
Irrigation Maintenance: Minor repairs to irrigation lines, valves and heads
Project Support: Support project development to ensure the campus standards are being met. Must be able to read and work from blueprints and specifications.
Employee Training: Schedule and host training sessions with new and veteran employees to ensure the safe use of landscape equipment. Work with manufacturer representatives to coordinate training as needed.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent plus 8 years of experience in landscape maintenance and demonstrated skill in tasks described above is required.
Completion of a two-year course in landscape maintenance is preferred.
Minor computer skills required using spreadsheets and word processing.
Must be able to follow oral and written instructions in English.
Possess knowledge of applicable safety procedures and regulations.
Must be able to pass the State Exam for the Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) and maintain it for the duration of employment.
Must be able to lift and move moderately heavy objects, up to 65 lb., safely.
Frequent kneeling and bending of legs and back are required.
Be able to work at elevated heights by means of a ladder, extension ladder, or man-lift.
Must possess a valid California driver's license.
